JAKARTA — Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman announced that law enforcement agencies have designated 13 individuals as suspects across eight criminal cases involving rice market manipulation and quality fraud across 15 commercial brands.

Speaking at a press conference in Jakarta on Sunday (Nov 8), Amran emphasized that the government will pursue strict legal action against business operators involved in rice blending, quality misrepresentation, and price gouging above government ceilings.

”We are announcing today that 15 rice brands are under violation, with 13 suspects named across eight distinct cases,” Minister Amran stated.

Zero Tolerance for Food Price Gouging

The Ministry of Agriculture stressed that rice remains a vital strategic commodity supported by state subsidies, requiring strict adherence to price thresholds. The policy enforces both the Maximum Retail Price (Harga Eceran Tertinggi/HET) to protect consumers and the Cost Purchase Price (Harga Pembelian Pemerintah/HPP) to safeguard farmers’ income.

”Do not play games with basic food supplies because it affects the livelihoods of the masses,” Amran warned. “Government-subsidized rice is strictly regulated to protect both farmers and consumers. Any attempt to extract illegitimate profits will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

The government urged rice distributors and mid-to-large-scale processors to immediately align their pricing and quality metrics with national standards to prevent further regulatory sanctions.
