The government of Indonesia is positioning its large-scale Free Nutritious Meal program as a key preventive strategy in the fight against tuberculosis (TB), underscoring improved nutrition as a vital long-term investment in public health.

The government emphasized that eliminating TB requires not only medical treatment but also prevention efforts through strengthened community nutrition.

The Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program has become part of a long-term initiative to boost the immunity of children and young people, helping protect them from infectious diseases such as TB.

Vice Minister of Health Benjamin P. Octavianus explained that improved nutrition plays a critical role in reducing vulnerability to various illnesses, including TB.

“This initiative is an investment in the quality of human resources in Indonesia. Eliminating TB is not just a health issue—it is also about safeguarding national productivity and our future,” the vice minister, known as Benny, said as quoted by InfoPublik on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2025.

He added that, in addition to strengthening health services, the government is preparing social protection measures for TB patients—especially informal workers who risk losing income during lengthy treatment.

This approach is part of a comprehensive TB strategy that includes early detection, treatment support, and socioeconomic assistance.

Benny noted that the government is also expanding its active case-finding efforts and the use of rapid molecular tests across all regencies and cities.

“This includes community-based treatment support. Our approach is integrated with nutrition, HIV services, and chronic disease care,” he said.
