Integrated Security for Christmas and New Year Demonstrates State’s Commitment to Protecting Citizens

JAKARTA – Ahead of the Christmas and New Year (Nataru) celebrations, the government, along with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), and various stakeholders, continues to strengthen national preparedness to ensure security, smooth logistics, and public comfort. Intelligence, defense, and security analyst Ngasiman Djoyonegoro assessed that the government’s current steps demonstrate a strong commitment to maintaining national stability amidst increased public mobility.

Ngaziman stated that the integrated security operations implemented by the TNI and Polri have proven effective year after year. “We see that the readiness of the authorities is very adequate. Security at places of worship, crowded centers, and main transportation routes is well-structured. This demonstrates good planning,” he said. He noted that community mobilization also plays a crucial role in strengthening early detection and preventing potential disturbances.

Coordination between agencies and regional governments is considered increasingly solid. Clear central policies provide a strong foundation for regions to act quickly. However, Ngasiman highlighted the challenges posed by the natural disasters that struck North Sumatra, Aceh, and West Sumatra. He explained, “Damage to vital facilities and disruption to communication access have indeed created logistical challenges. However, the government has moved quickly by mobilizing cross-ministerial assistance to restore the situation.”

He reminded that the most prominent public security risk ahead of Christmas and New Year is small-scale disturbances that could trigger public panic. Furthermore, extreme weather has the potential to hamper food distribution and slow down logistics channels. “Extreme weather must remain anticipated. The government has prepared a multi-layered distribution strategy to ensure food supplies remain secure,” he said.

Furthermore, Ngasiman emphasized that the situation in Sumatra and Aceh over the past week requires full attention. The government has reportedly taken accelerated response measures to prevent the impact of the disaster from spreading. He added, “The government’s preparedness deserves appreciation. This kind of rapid response is crucial so we don’t have to face sudden situations again.”

Despite the challenges, securing places of worship and monitoring new arrivals is progressing well. Early detection is carried out down to the neighborhood unit (RT) and community unit (RW) levels, involving collaboration between officials, local governments, and community organizations. “Gotong royong (mutual cooperation) is our social capital for maintaining collective security,” he said.

The government is currently finalizing a national security operation plan to anticipate increased public activity in various regions. Collaboration between authorities and the public, combined with the government’s commitment to maintaining national stability, is expected to ensure that Christmas and New Year celebrations are safe, comfortable, and filled with togetherness. According to Ngasiman, “These efforts are not only about security, but also about ensuring the continuity of national development so that it continues unhindered.”
