SUMBAWA — The Governor of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), H. Lalu Muhamad Iqbal, conducted a spot inspection to monitor the progress of the strategic Lenangguar–Lunyuk road project in Sumbawa Regency, Saturday (May 9, 2026). During the field visit, the Governor—familiarly known as Miq Iqbal—issued a stern ultimatum to technical teams to ensure all work is completed no later than May 30, 2026.
The restoration of this 61-kilometer stretch is considered vital as it serves as the primary artery for agricultural distribution and public mobility in Southern Sumbawa.
A New Paradigm: Risk-Mitigation Based Infrastructure
Miq Iqbal highlighted that the majority of road damage in this segment was caused by unstable slope structures and inadequate drainage systems. He emphasized that future road construction standards must move beyond mere paving and incorporate comprehensive disaster mitigation aspects.
”Everything must be finished by May 30. Do not just build the road surface; you must calculate water flow and landslide risks. From now on, drainage is a mandatory requirement in road design,” Miq Iqbal asserted while inspecting a landslide-prone area currently being reinforced with gabions.
Fiscal Efficiency and Harvest Season Security
The Governor stressed that acceleration is urgent given the current peak harvest season. Damaged road sections are considered extremely hazardous for trucks transporting local crops.
Furthermore, Miq Iqbal advocated for a preventive maintenance system to save regional budgets. In his view, repairing minor damage is far more cost-effective than a total reconstruction after the road has collapsed. “Our budget is better spent opening new regional connections and strengthening economic access, rather than constantly being drained by repairing damage that could have been prevented from the start,” he concluded.
