Smoke Reaches Neighbors: DPR Urges Malaysia and Singapore to Help Fight Forest Fires, Not Just Complain

The annual cycle of “haze export” from Kalimantan’s forest and land fires (karhutla) has once again brought diplomatic relations between Indonesia and its regional neighbors to a boil—matching the blistering heat of the burning peatlands.

According to a report from Parlementaria the Chairman of Commission VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Marwan Dasopang, reached his limit with Malaysia and Singapore’s routine of filing official diplomatic protests the moment their skies turn gray. The lawmaker pointed out a crucial detail the neighboring nations often overlook: a significant portion of the palm oil plantations in Kalimantan are owned by investors from their own countries.

”You Profit Here, So Help Fight the Fire!”

The response from the House hit straight at the core of the issue. The logic presented by the DPR is simple yet devastatingly sharp: if Malaysian and Singaporean companies seamlessly rake in massive profits from thousands of hectares of palm oil concessions on Indonesian soil, it is only fair that they roll up their sleeves when those same lands catch fire.

“You own palm oil plantations here, take responsibility!” was the unspoken message. The DPR signaled that foreign investors shouldn’t be permitted to celebrate record revenues during harvest season, only to play the victim and hoard N95 masks in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore when the dry season brings smoke.

The Irony of Haze Diplomacy: Present for Harvest, Absent for Fires

This cross-border dispute exposes two recurring political ironies:

  1. Hands-Off Foreign Investment: If neighboring corporations hold vast concessions in Indonesia, they should deploy more than just harvesting equipment—they need dedicated water-bombing helicopters and firefighter teams on their sites. It is nonsensical to pocket the profits at home while relying solely on Indonesian authorities and emergency personnel to extinguish the flames.
  2. Selective Environmental Sensitivity: Neighboring governments are quick to monitor the Air Pollutant Index (API) when haze drifts across their borders. However, they appear far less eager to audit whether their own overseas subsidiaries strictly comply with zero-burning land clearing policies on the ground.

The DPR’s firm stance serves as a reminder that diplomacy cannot rely on complaint letters alone. If foreign capital profits from Kalimantan’s natural resources, those investors must be prepared to help put out the fires—rather than just holding their breath and complaining about the smoke.
