JAKARTA – President Prabowo Subianto expressed his appreciation for the Minister of Forestry (Menhut), Raja Juli Antoni, in his determination to preserve Indonesia’s forests. This was conveyed in a Presidential Briefing during a working meeting with members of the Red and White Cabinet at the State Palace in Jakarta, Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
In his remarks, the President highlighted the widespread issue of unclear business permits, including activities in protected forest areas. However, after conducting direct inspections, he assessed that the Minister of Forestry had demonstrated a firm stance by not issuing new logging permits.
“I received reports that there are hundreds of unclear mines, or unclear IUPs, in protected forests and other forests. I’m checking,” Prabowo said during his briefing.
After conducting the investigation, the President expressed satisfaction with the Minister of Forestry’s performance. He stated that Raja Juli Antoni has not issued any logging permits.
“I checked with the Minister of Forestry, and thank God, he’s doing well. He hasn’t issued any logging permits yet,” he continued.
This statement reinforces the government’s commitment to protecting forest areas from overexploitation. The Minister of Forestry’s assertiveness is considered a crucial part of efforts to reform sustainable forestry governance.
Previously, Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni emphasized that the policy of protecting forests is not only about the environment, but also concerns national identity. He emphasized that forests have strategic value as part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage.
“In that context, we believe that protecting forests is the same as protecting Indonesia’s culture and heritage,” said Raja Juli Antoni.
Furthermore, the Minister of Forestry explained that the government continues to promote sustainable forest management, including through strengthening customary forests and involving communities. This step aligns with the President’s directive to ensure forest protection is carried out firmly and inclusively.
The President’s appreciation at the briefing emphasized the strong synergy between national leadership and relevant ministries in preserving forests. Firmness in withholding logging permits is considered a crucial foundation for ensuring forests remain sustainable for future generations.
