MATARAM, Indonesia — An Indonesian migrant worker, Yanuar, has reportedly become trapped in an illegal compound in Myanmar after initially departing to seek employment in Singapore, with his family now facing a 70 million rupiahs ($4,500) ransom demand for his safe release.
The human trafficking incident highlights persistent vulnerabilities within informal labor recruitment channels operating across Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) and broader Indonesian provinces.
Advocacy groups and local family members outlined critical details surrounding the forced labor case:
- Deceptive Recruitment: The victim was originally promised a legitimate employment contract in Singapore before being rerouted through illegal transit points to Myanmar.
- Extortion & Captivity: Human traffickers held the worker in an online scamming hub, demanding a 70 million rupiahs ransom from his family in exchange for his release.
- Government Intervention: Family members have formally requested assistance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Indonesian diplomatic missions in Southeast Asia to secure his safety and repatriation.
