INDONESIA WINS 2026 FIFA ASEAN CUP AFTER DRAMATIC PENALTY SHOOTOUT

JAKARTA — The Indonesian national football team clinched the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup title after defeating Thailand 4–2 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a –2 draw after extra time at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) in Jakarta on Monday evening, October 5, 2026.

The victory was anchored by Mataram-born goalkeeper Emil Audero Mulyadi, who made a critical penalty save to secure the championship for the Garuda squad.

The grueling 120-minute final delivered high tactical tension and late-game drama:

  • Regular & Extra Time: The sides remained deadlocked at 1–1 after 90 minutes. Thailand retook the lead in the 110th minute through Peeradol Chamrasamee’s counterattack, before Indonesian defender Elkan Baggott equalized in the 116th minute off a pass from Rizky Ridho.
  • Penalty Shootout Triumph: Indonesia held composure to win 4–2 in the shootout. Two Thai penalty takers failed to score—one hitting the post and the other blocked by Emil Audero.
  • Regional Pride for NTB: Emil Audero, born in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), to a Lombok father, Edy Mulyadi, and an Italian mother, Antonella Audero, emerged as the match hero.

The championship victory marks a historic milestone for Indonesian football, celebrating both national tactical resilience and the international achievements of diaspora athletes.
